Biography

Sophie Frederikke Hansen was born on August 30, 1856 in Hoje Taastrup, Denmark. She was the second of five children born to her parents. When Sophie was only five, her family, who had joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, emigrated to Utah to join other members of the church. Two of Sophie's siblings died during the journey. Not too long after their arrival in Utah, Sophie's father, Rasmus Hansen, died as well. Her widowed mother married John Fredrich Mack, the leader of the Scandinavian Saints in Utah in 1866 and, at an unknown time shortly after, Sophie married him as well. She was the fourth of his five wives.

Sophie had her first child in 1871, at the age of fifteen. Though he didn't survive, she had another son and a daughter who lived into adulthood. Shortly after the birth of her second daughter, Josephine, Sophie died as well, followed quickly by her infant daughter. She died on September 27, 1879 in Smithfield, Utah, at the age of twenty-three.
