Biography

Else Marie Frederiksdatter was born on February 24, 1832 in Tårs, Denmark. She was the first of four children. Around 1853, she had a relationship with a man names Niels Jensen, with whom she had her daughter, Jensine, in 1854. In 1855, records show Else living with her divorced mother and young daughter again. In 1856, she gave birth to a son, Morten Nielsen, who only lived a few days. The next year, she married his father, Niels Mortensen.

At some point before 1862, Else Marie joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and decided to emigrate to Utah. Her father Frederick Christensen had already settled in Utah, so Else and her daughter Jensine traveled alone. They crossed the Atlantic on board the ship Franklin and then the plains with the John R. Murdock company before arriving in the Utah valley in September of 1862. Else settled in Ephraim, Utah, and married a man named Johan Laursen in 1864. She died on March 7, 1917 in Ephraim.
