Biography
Karen Hansine Nielsen, or "Sina", as she was called, was born on February 11, 1850 in Sankt Knuds, Odense, Denmark. She was the fifth of seven children born to Maren Hansdatter and Hans Nielsen. Around 1860, Sina's family learned about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Eventually, Sina's three brothers, two living sisters, and mother all joined the Church. Sina was baptized in 1865. However, her father never wanted to join the Church and was against the family leaving Denmark. Nevertheless, Sina left Denmark for the United States with her mother, sisters, and brother in 1865, at just fifteen years old. Her eldest two brothers were already in Utah.
The family arrived in Utah in November of 1865. They settled in the Provo area. Just over a year later, in January of 1867, Sina married Christian Korup Jeppesen. She was his third wife. They had nine children together, four boys and five girls. Two of Sina's daughters died when they were young, but the rest of her children lived to adulthood. Sina lived in Provo and Lakeview for the rest of her life. She died in Provo on August 9, 1943, at the age of ninety-three.
