Biography
Mette Kirstine Mortensen was born on May 2, 1845 in Hårbølle, Denmark. She was the seventh of nine children. In 1855, which Mette was only ten, her family converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The next year, they decided to emigrate to Utah to join the other Saints. After the long journey across the Atlantic, the Mortensen family gave of their excess to support other Saints crossing the plains. Because of this, they had to make the journey by handcart. The family was part of the Willie handcart company. Despite many hardships, the whole family survived and made it to Utah. Mette was eleven when they reached the Salt Lake Valley in November of 1856. The family settled in Parowan, Utah.
In 1863, Mette married Christen Rasmussen, another Danish immigrant. They settled in Parowan and had nine children, three daughters and six sons. Mette lived in Parowan for the rest of her life and died there on July 5, 1935, at the age of ninety.
