Biography

Johanna Larsdatter was born on April 12, 1815 in Nes, Norway to Johanna Nielsdatter Herseth and Lars Nielsen Hoff. She was their first and only child to live to adulthood. Johanna married Lars Andersen on April 27, 1839 in Nes, Norway. Lars and Johanna owned the farm Evenrud in Norway. Throughout her life, Johanna went back and forth between using her patronymic “Larsdatter” and the farm name “Evenrud” as her last name. Johanna and Lars were at first very opposed to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but after several of their daughters joined the church, their hearts softened and they were baptized in January 1863.

In April 1863, Johanna, Lars, and their two daughters departed from Liverpool to head to America. The family settled in Fairview, Utah, where many other Scandinavian Saints had settled. By 1870, Lars and Johanna had divorced and Lars had left and remarried. Johanna lived the rest of her life alone. She appears in two censuses after this as divorced and living alone in Sanpete county, Utah. Johanna Evenrud Larsdatter died on March 23, 1907 in Fairview, Utah. She was buried two days later in the Fairview cemetery.
