Biography

Margarethe Anne Hansen was born on November 4, 1837. She was the second of four children, although only she and her older sister lived to adulthood. In 1852, her family learned about the Church of Jesus Christ and they all became members. The next year, Margarethe left Denmark for Utah with her parents and sister. They crossed the Atlantic on the ship "Benjamin Adams" and crossed the plains in the Hans Peter Olsen company.

A little less than a year after their arrival in Utah, when she was seventeen, Margarethe married Thore Torstensen, a man from Norway, in Salt Lake City. They had ten children, seven daughters and three sons, together. They settled in Ephraim in Sanpete county, Utah. Around 1865, the family moved briefly to Circleville, Piute, Utah, where Margarethe's fifth daughter Esther was born. Shortly after her birth, they moved back to Ephraim for many years. After the death of her husband and his other wife, and the marriage of her son Hyrum, Margarethe Anne was lonely and moved to Richfield to live with her daughter Matilda. She lived in Richfield for the last eight years of her life until she passed away on November 21, 1914 at the age of seventy-seven.
