Biography

Johanna Marie Christina Rigtrup was born in 1842 in Denmark to Peder and Johanna Elizabeth Rigtrup. She had two brothers and one sister. Her family came to the United States in 1855, settling in Burlington, St. Louis, and then Omaha. Johanna married Andrew Eklund Nelson on May 15, 1859 in Omaha. A few weeks after their marriage, they started for Utah in a covered wagon. They arrived in Salt Lake City in October 1859. They moved on to Spanish Fork in Utah county where their twelve children were born. Nine of these children grew to adulthood. Johanna Marie was proud of her heritage, and, like her brave parents, was not afraid of any task, but made each task a stepping stone to something higher. She was very generous and a friend of the poor. For many years, she was a very active worker in the Relief Society. Johanna Marie passed away in December 1884, at the age of 42 years and 9 months. She left small children in their home and some older family members who could help in rearing these children. Her husband Andrew lived until 1900, sixteen years after Johanna died. They both died in Spanish Fork, their home in Utah. These were noble pioneers who left a great legacy of faith and fortitude for those who
have followed them. (Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, Pioner Women of Faith and Fortitutde.)
