Biography

"Andrew Jens Isgreen was born in 1830 in Sweden, was taught the Gospel by Erastus Snow, and joined the Church in 1853 being among the first converts in Sweden. After he joined the Church his family disowned him. He was put into prison because of his testimony of the true Gospel that led him to actively preach the Gospel to his neighbors. He was given only bread and water for one of the months and was regularly whipped seeking him to renounce his testimony. After three months, his employer assisted him in having him released from prison paying a large sum of money. His parent’s home and blacksmith shop were burned to the ground during this persecution. He and his wife and six-year-old son were pleased to leave all this behind and go to America by ship and then by wagon to Utah in 1860 in the Captain Warren Walling Company. They settled in Grantsville and then Tooele. They suffered the privations of pioneer living, once having to go without flour for six weeks, until they were able to borrow some from Wilford Woodruff in Salt Lake City."
