Biography

Caroline Svensdotter Flygare was born on March 1, 1846 in Torhamn, Blekinge, Sweden, the last of nine children born to Lisken Andersdotter Sorman and Sven Andersson Flygare. Caroline was a schoolteacher in Sweden. She immigrated to the United States in June 1872 to live with her brother in Utah. Caroline met and married Anthon Skanchy as a plural wife on October 10, 1872 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was Anthon’s second wife. Caroline lived with Anthon’s first wife, Ane, in the same house for the first fifteen years of their marriage. Each wife had her own wing of the house, and Anthon would spend every other month with each wife in their wing.

Caroline and Anthon had four children together, three sons and one daughter, all of whom survived to adulthood. Caroline and Anthon’s other wives often had to manage alone as Anthon served as Bishop and served several missions to Scandinavia. Caroline died on May 7, 1918 in Logan, Utah and was buried in the Logan Cemetery.
