Biography

Ane Kirstine Jacobsen was born on September 8, 1832 in Kragerø, Telemark, Norway. She was the first of five children born to Ole Jacobsen and Maren Christensdatter. Ane married Anders Ludvig Otterbeck on March 29, 1853 in Kragerø, Telemark, Norway. She had five children, one who died as a baby, with Anders before she was suddenly widowed in between 1862 and 1864. By the late 1860s, Ane had become an assistant in the mission office of the Scandinavian mission. It was while serving in the mission office that she met Norwegian missionary Anthon Skanchy.

In 1868, Anthon Skanchy and Ane were married. In June of the same year, Ane, her four children, and her new husband Anthon, emigrated to Zion. Ane and Anthon ultimately settled in Logan, Utah. She had four more children with Anthon, but none of them survived to adulthood. Ane’s husband served five more missions to Scandinavia throughout his life, leaving Ane alone to tend to the family and homestead. This undoubtedly took great strength and courage. Ane died on December 14, 1892 at the age of sixty. She was buried in Logan, Utah.
