Biography

Caroline Hansen was born as Sophia Caroline Miller to Carl and Christy Miller. The family lived in Tåderup, Denmark at the time of her birth. She is remembered as having five siblings in a memorial document. The siblings mentioned are brothers Anna and Hans, and sisters Karen Sophie, and Mary. In her family tree she is recorded to have six siblings: Karen Sophie, Mette Marie, Anders Peder, Ane Margarethe, Hans Jensen, and Nicoline Josephine. Her entire family converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1853.

After their conversion, the family gradually moved to the Americas. Caroline was the first one to do so at the age of twenty-two, and was followed by Karen, then her parents and the rest of the family. When she arrived in America, she was assigned to a handcart company that traveled successfully out to Utah. Arriving in Salt Lake City, she worked for a family there until the rest of her family arrived and they settled in Sandy.

While the family lived in Sandy, their friend from Denmark who had recently been widowed, Christian, came to visit. As Caroline was a young woman who was unmarried and unemployed at the time, when Christian offered a position as a housekeeper, Caroline took it. Christian and his first wife Inger had five small children when she passed away, so Caroline was in charge of keeping house and caring for the children. In October of 1863, on the 28th, Christian and Caroline were married. After their marriage, Caroline gave birth to eleven children, although only seven lived to see adulthood.

Caroline and Christian were part of a plural marriage, with his second wife being Sophia Hansen.
