Biography

Sidse Marie Hansen was born on June 15, 1850 in Fanefjord, Præstø, Denmark to Karen Kirstine Hansdatter and Hans Larsen. Her father died at sea in 1852, so she and her brother were raised by her mother alone. Mary (as Sidse was known throughout her life) was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in January 1858. About a year later, Mary and her family left for Zion aboard the William Tapscott. While on the ship, Mary’s mother remarried. The family traveled in the Robert F. Nelsen Wagon Company to Salt Lake City with hundreds of other European Saints.

On June 29, 1867 Mary married Almerin Elander Root in Salt Lake City, Utah. By 1869, their relationship had ended and Mary had married Archibald Gardner. She had eight children with Archibald in West Jordan, Utah. Mary and Archibald eventually moved their family to Afton, Wyoming where she was a part of the Relief Society Presidency for several years. Mary eventually returned to Utah where she died on October 20, 1921 in Salt Lake City. She was buried in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
