Biography

After the death of her parents, Sophia took up work in a fabric factory with her sister Cajsa. They immigrated to the US after meeting the missionaries and settled in Mt. Pleasant. She became the second wife of Andrew Johnson who died in an accident a year and a half after their marriage. Sophia and her sister-wife Bengta were taken into the house of Andrew Peterson as his second and third wives. It is reported that the first wife was abusive to her two sister-wives. Sophia had two children in this marriage before Andrew Peterson died in January of 1873. During this time Sophia took up work weaving for women in the community and was involved as the Relief Society president. The following fall of 1874, Sophia married Christian Larsen and was very active in investing and running their farm. He died in the summer of 1887 leaving Sophia a widow for the final time. Sophia lived another forty years supporting herself and ten children.
