Biography

Ane Marie Nielsen was born on October 24, 1859 in Holbæk, Denmark to parents Kirsten and Peder Nielsen. Her parents met the missionaries and converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and so at 5 years old, Ane Marie embarked with her family from Denmark to Utah. On May 4, 1865, the family sailed from Copenhagen, Denmark to Kiel, Germany on the steamer “Aurora”, and from there took the train to Hamburg. From Hamburg, they took the B.S. Kimball with many other Saints to New York, landing there on the 15th of June. The family traveled to Wyoming, Nebraska by rail and steamboat, and then completed their journey to Utah by wagon train as a part of the Miner G. Atwood Company, arriving on November 8, 1865. By this time, Ane Marie was 6 years old. She moved with her parents to Spanish Fork, UT, where their first home had blankets in lieu of typical doors and windows. At the age of 21, Ane Marie married her childhood friend of the pioneer trail, Wilhelm Friedrich Johann Ernst Vier on December 16, 1880 in the Salt Lake Endowment House. The two had five children together. Ane Marie was known as a dedicated member of both the Oliver Howard Women’s Relief Corps and the Women’s Republican Club. She died at 57 years old on May 26, 1917, and was survived by her husband and children. Information gathered from life sketch, obituaries, and profile in Pioneer Women of Faith and Fortitude.
