Biography
Johanne Martinsen Moen was born on March 31, 1873 in Brandal, Hedemarken, Norway. She was the first of nine children born to Randine Engebrechtsen Hammer and Martin Olsen Hanestadmoen. Johanne joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1897, and she immigrated to Utah a year later. Johanne returned to Oslo in 1903 to do coursework at the University of Oslo. While in Oslo, Johanne gave a well-attended lecture defending the Church. Johanne also did some coursework at Columbia College in New York.
Johanne was a professor of textiles and clothing at Utah State Agricultural College (now Utah State University) from 1914 to her retirement in 1940. Throughout her career, Johanne was a huge proponent of creating practical, durable, and comfortable clothing, especially for women and children. Along with teaching, she was a member of several women’s clubs at the university. She was also a member of the Cache County Relief Society board for many years.
Johanne Moen died on May 12, 1954 in Logan, Utah and was buried in Logan, Utah.
