Excerpt from "Mica Martine Catrine Margrethe Pedersen," written by her youngest child, Vivian Smith:
"They moved to Grantsville, where her oldest son, Don Carlos Elder was born October 10, 1860. He was later drowned in an irrigation ditch that ran in front of the house. Martine went on an errand to a neighbor's house about a mile away. The neighbor insisted that she stay for dinner. "While they were eating word came that 'Donnie' had drowned". It was hard for her to realize that curly haired darling who played "Boo" with her when she left home; would never cheer her with his sunny smile again. Four months later her second son Eli Alonzo was born August 31, 1862."
