Biography

Sarah was born on August 3, 1852 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Though her family was Swedish, they had moved to Denmark in order to emigrate to America. In 1856, the family traveled on the ship Thornton to America. When they arrived, they met with the Willie Handcart company to travel to Utah. The journey was very difficult and Sarah's father, Olof, nailed straps to the back of the cart to help pull Sarah and her younger sister Josephine along. The family ended up settling in Manti, where Olof died shortley thereafter. In 1865, Ella moved with her stepfather and sister to Washington, Utah where she worked in the cotton mill. It was in Washington that Sarah met her husband Frederick Binning Goold, to whom she was married on March 20, 1874. After their marriage, they moved to Monroe, Utah where they lived the rest of their lives. Sarah and Frederick had eight children. When Frederick was called to serve a mission in great Britain, Sarah worked hard to take care of the family in his absence and even managed to pay off a $200 debt. She is remembered as a generous and faithful woman. She died on December 20, 1907 at the age of 55.
