Biography
Augusta Maria Outzen was born on January 14, 1854 in Randers, Denmark. She was the first of thirteen children. Her parents joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at about the same time that she was born, and for sixteen years, she lived in Denmark with them. At fifteen years old, Augusta married Jesse Nathaniel Smith, who was serving as president of the Scandinavian Mission at the time. She was his fourth of five wives, though one of his wives had already passed away.
In 1870, Augusta and her family were finally able to leave Denmark to join the other Saints in Utah. They sailed on the steamship Minnesota and crossed the Atlantic in twelve days. They were also the first company of immigrating Saints to take the railroad to Utah. After Augusta, her parents and siblings, and her husband arrived in the Salt Lake Valley, Augusta settled in Parowan, Utah with her husband and his other wives. Ten years later, in 1880, her family relocated to Snowflake, Arizona as part of the effort to settle that area. Augusta had eleven children, nine daughters and two sons, all of whom lived into adulthood. Her husband and four of her children died before her, but Augusta remained in Snowflake until her death on April 26, 1932.
