Biography

Augusta Maria Outzen was born on January 14, 1854 in Randers, Denmark. She was the first of thirteen children. Her parents joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints about the time that she was born, and for sixteen years, she lived in Denmark with them. At fifteen years old, Augusta married Jesse Nathaniel Smith, who was serving as president of the Scandinavian Mission at the time. She was his fourth of five wives.

After Augusta, her parents and siblings, and her husband emigrated to Utah in 1870, she settled in Parowan, Utah with her family. In 1880, her family relocated to Snowflake, Arizona as part of the effort to settle that area. Augusta had eleven children, nine daughters and two sons, all of whom lived into adulthood. She lived in Snowflake until her death on April 26, 1932.
