Biography

Kjerstine Christiansdatter was born on September 17, 1823 in Vadum, Aalborg, Denmark. She was the only child of her parents. The three of them lived on a farm in Vadum as Kjerstine grew up. When she was around thirty years old, Kjerstine married Hans Peter Madsen Sr., who was also a resident of Vadum. Her parents lived with them on the family farm. A few years after their marriage, in 1858, Kjerstine and Hans joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Kjerstine's parents were not happy with her decision. In 1860, she and her husband left Denmark forever to join the Saints in Utah.

The couple lived briefly in Salt Lake City before settling in Big Cottonwood. Kjerstine supported her husband when he married two other wives, and sometime around 1880, the whole family moved to Willard, Utah, where they homsteaded a property. While Kjerstine never had any children, she helped the other wives with theirs and did a lot of work on the farm. She died in Willard on August 8, 1902.
