Biography

Born 1833 in Denmark as the third of twelve children, Bergetta learned to weave as a young girl. She was educated in a public school and then read and discussed the Bible with her family. They were part of the Lutheran church, but her father was not entirely satisfied, so they switched to Baptist. Later the whole family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They faced many persecutions before her father sold their farm and they left to join the saints in Utah. Bergetta and her family emigrated in 1853 and shortly after arriving in Utah, she married Goute Eriksen. She became his second wife, her older sister being the first. The couple had four daughters and five sons together, but only three lived past childhood. Bergetta was known for her sincerity and humility. She disliked gossip and her motto was, “Better keep still if you can say nothing good.” For a few years, she and Gordy lived in the United Order, during which she supervised the dairy products for the whole community. She served not just in her community, but in many various roles of service in the church. At age 82 she had a stroke and passed away in Kane, Utah.
