Biography
Karen Margrette was born in Denmark in 1803. As a young child she learned to weave and helped her mother make clothes. At 25 she married Knud Christensen Nelson and together they had six girls and six boys, three of which died in infancy. Her family was part of the Lutheran church and would read the Bible together, but in 1851 she joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with her husband. They faced a lot of persecution after converting and emigrated to Utah a year after. They took all but their oldest son with them as he was called to serve a mission in Norway. Karen’s father passed away along the journey and Karen was sick for the rest of the trip. She recovered once they arrived in Utah and they settled in Bountiful. They were very kind and generous people, assisting others in emigrating as well. Karen’s husband, Knud, passed away in 1862 and then Karen died of a stroke in her daughter’s home in 1873 at age 70.
