Biography
Karen Hansen was born on December 12, 1835 in Vester Ulslev, Denmark. She was the first of four children, only two of which, Karen and her sister Margarethe Anne, lived to adulthood. In 1852, the family met missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and they joined the Church that same year. In December of 1853, the family left Denmark to journey to America to live with the Saints in Utah. They arrived in Utah sometime in 1854.
The family settled in Ephraim, Utah, and on January 9, 1855, Karen married Christian Sorensen Nielsen, who she met crossing the plains. He already had two daughters by his first wife, who died during the journey, and Karen had seven more children with him. From 1865-1866, they attempted to settle Circle Valley before they were driven out and settled again in Ephraim. Karen lived in Ephraim the rest of her life. She died on June 22, 1907.
