Biography

Karen Kristine Pedersdatter was born on January 25, 1837 on Bornholm. She was the sixth of ten children and the first daughter. Karen's father Peder died in 1845, when Karen was only eight years old. Four years later, her mother remarried, to Jens Pedersen Marcher. In 1851, missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints arrived on Bornholm. Karen and her family believed their message, and she was baptized a member of the church in 1852 in the Baltic Sea.

Towards the end of 1853, Karen left her home and traveled with the Kofoed family to Utah to join other members of the Church there. She likely arrived sometime in 1854. In 1856, Karen married George Kofoed Hansen Riis, and they settled in Salt Lake City, Utah. They had nine children together, three daughters and six sons. Karen lived in Salt Lake City for the rest of her life. She passed away there on February 17, 1920 at the age of eighty-three.
