Biography

Ane Margrete was born in Seden, Odense, Denmark to Martens Jens Madsen and Karen Nielsen on June 22, 1805. She married Christian Nielsen on March 20, 1842 in Tanderup, Odense, Denmark. The two had one child, Karen Marie. The two were converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and thus planned to make the journey to Zion with other Danish emigrants. The family left on the ship "Westmorland" from Liverpool, and arrived in Philadelphia on May 31, 1857. They then traveled by train to Iowa and finished the journey to Utah by handcart in the Christian Christensen Handcart Company, arriving in the Salt Lake Valley on September 13, 1857. In the Spring of 1859, they moved to Mount Pleasant in Sanpete County to help establish a new settlement of saints. It was there that her husband took three more women to wife, establishing a polygamous relationship. Ane spent the remainder of her life with her only daughter, Karen, and died on March 16, 1883.
