Biography
Carn (Karen Marie) was born in Lunge, Denmark in July of 1842. After missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints arrived in Denmark, Karen's family were taught and then joined the church, with Karen being baptized at age 11. Joining the church made her schooling difficult, and thus her minister taught her separately after hours. Karen's family left Denmark in the Spring of 1857 for Utah. They left on the ship "Westmorland" from Liverpool, and arrived in Philadelphia on May 31, 1857. They then traveled by train to Iowa and finished the journey to Utah by handcart, arriving in the Salt Lake Valley on September 13, 1857. Karen Marie battled illness for the majority of the journey. After living in Salt Lake for two years, Karen moved to Ephraim, where she met Morten Rasmussen, whom she married on April 1, 1859. The couple then moved to Mt. Pleasant where they established their permanent home. During their time there, they were heavily involved in the church, aided with freighting for the Manti Utah Temple, and were known for their kindness and generosity. Karen bore 12 children, 8 of whom survived to adulthood. After Morten was called on a mission to Denmark in 1881, she was left alone to raise and support her family, and was later left a widow at age 42 when Morten died in 1885. Karen remained a faithful, dedicated Latter-day Saint member until her death at age 57, when she succumbed to a deadly abdominal tumor.
